Discover one of the oldest cities in the Caribbean. Its historic center, the Zona Colonial dates back to the 16th century. It was founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496. However, when the Europeans arrived in this land, it was already inhabited by the Taíno Indians. Said indigenous people had divided the island into five chiefdoms, which were a showcase of their whole culture.
Today, it is the tenth most populous city in Latin America, and the most populous in the Caribbean. It is one of the largest cultural, economic, political, commercial and industrial centers in the Dominican Republic. In addition, its historic center and Ciudad Colonial were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990.
